Not sure which oil to buy?

If you have central heat (forced air or a hot-water boiler) you can use the #2 LS Heating Oil. This fuel is the least expensive and will burn fine in the central heat systems. Another clue to find out if you have this system is to look at your tank. If your tank is on legs made out of pipe or if it is relatively close to the ground, then you can burn the #2 LS Heating Oil.

However, if your tank is sitting in a stand that is fairly tall, then you probably need to order one of the #1 Kerosene Oils.Tanks that sit in a stand are for systems that do not have a pump. That system has to have fuel brought into it by gravity (thus the tall stand). If you have a large boxed-shape unit that sits out in a room and is used to heat the whole house (from that one room), then you need to use either the #1 Dyed Kerosene or the #1 Clear Kerosene. This unit is known commonly as a Kerosene Stove.

If you have a smaller furnace (like what is usually found in mobile homes), check on the unit for a metal plaque or a label. On this plaque or label the manufacturer will state what fuel the unit can use (i.e. “Can use #1 or #2 Fuel” or “Use #1 Fuel only”).

Why Oil Heat?

When it comes to your home and your family, you want your heating system to be safe and efficient. That’s why Oilheat is your best choice when it comes to reliable comfort.

Here are ways in which Oilheat exemplifies safety and dependability:
  • It will not burn in a liquid state. In order to light heating oil on fire, you must heat it above 140 degrees, the temperature at which it begins to vaporize.
  • There are visible warnings if there is a malfunction. With home heating oil systems, carbon monoxide leaks rarely happen without warning. If an Oilheat system should malfunction, it will release smoke or soot as a visible warning; these serve as early indicators that something is wrong, long before dangerous carbon monoxide can be released into the air.
  • It is non-explosive. Heating oil is not explosive.

Oilheat is an environmentally-friendly and efficient way to heat your home and hot water.

  • Oilheat burns cleanly. Today's Oilheat burns 95% cleaner than in 1970. Since it burns so cleanly, it comes well within the air pollution standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency. Low-sulfur products and biofuels, such as those made from soy beans, will further reduce the already near-zero emissions.
  • Oilheat is kind to the environment. In fact, residential heating oil equipment creates such a negligible amount of emissions that heating oil is not even regulated by the Federal Clean Air Act. Oil storage tanks do not pose a threat to the environment because Oilheat is non-toxic, non-carcinogenic and biodegradable.

Oil Tanks are Ecologically Beneficial

There are lots of misconceptions about oil tanks. Tanks can last for decades without needing replacement. Oil tanks are efficient in the following ways:

  • Most tanks are designed with corrosion-resistant materials. This allows for long life and exceptional safety.
  • Heating oil moves slowly in most soils, so any discharge is usually confined to a small area.
  • Many new heating oil tanks are installed below-ground using new, innovative technologies.
  • According to a major national study, the chance of a leak from an underground heating oil tank is less than ¼ of 1%.

The Benefits of Fuel Storage

Like many homeowners, you may have bottled water or canned goods stored in your home. Doesn't it feel good knowing these items are readily available? It's very much the same with a heating oil tank.

Oil tanks also combine cost-efficiency and convenience by allowing you to store product and use it as you need it in the future.

A storage tank means your own fuel, safely stored, and purchased at a great value.

Heating oil is dependable, abundant, and is economically beneficial.
Oilheat, therefore, remains an affordable and value-packed choice.

  • Oilheat is economical. If you adjust for inflation, the price of heating oil is actually less than it was in 1980! Plus, competition among local Oilheat companies helps to ensure a better value.
  • Oilheat is efficient. Thanks to major advancements being made in Oilheat burner technology, some Oilheat systems now boast efficiency ratings of over 95%! Modern Oilheat equipment actually burns less fuel. The average annual fuel consumption in 1973 was 1,294 gallons; and now it is only 833 gallons – that’s 35% less fuel.
  • Oilheat is dependable. There will always be a plentiful supply, even during the coldest winter months. In fact, the United States has a Strategic Petroleum Reserve with a capacity of 720 million barrels -- the world's largest emergency oil stockpile -- in addition to a two-million-barrel heating oil reserve. There are over 50 oil producing countries, and the U.S. is not dependent on any one country or region for its supply.
  • Oilheat’s price is right. Compared to the Consumer Price Index, which represents the average prices consumers pay on a wide range of products, Oilheat has increased about half as much. In comparison, medical care has increased in cost by nearly 400%.
